Dat vraag je jezelf echt af als je haar nieuwste blog leest. Sinds ruim een maand is ze lid van het 23 koppen tellende PokerStars Team Online. Peppe kende een stroeve eerste maand. Niet zo gek voor iemand die voorheen vrijwel niet op internet pokerde: “I never once considered online play as a means to make money.”
Aparte uitspraak voor een internetpro, niet? Peppe pokert al een jaar of zeven, geïnspireerd door WSOP 2003 kampioen Chris Moneymaker waarmee de pokerboom begon. “I watched Chris Moneymaker's win and I was hooked.” Ze is nu al vijf jaar pro. De Amerikaanse maakte haar uren aan de pokertafels niet digitaal, maar in de echte wereld in het Bicycle Casino in Los Angeles.
Toen Peppe er lucht van kreeg dat PokerStars met een professioneel internetteam zou gaan starten, schreef ze meteen een brief. Nooit geschoten is altijd mis, moet ze hebben gedacht. Ze schrijft op haar blog dat veel spelers haar vroegen: “If you are a live player, why are you now part of Team Online?” Peppe’s antwoord is eenvoudig: “I filled out the application in October and here I am!”
Maar als ze er verder over gaat nadenken, weet ze wel zeker dat haar prima prestatie bij de WSOP van 2009 een grote rol heeft gespeeld voor PokerStars. Tijdens het WSOP Main Event was Peppe heel erg veel in beeld bij ESPN. Ze werd 75ste voor een kleine $69K. “I am pretty sure that my results at the 2009 WSOP Main Event played a big part in the decision. Especially since I sported the PokerStars logo in all its glory throughout my ESPN coverage.”
Uit Peppe’s verhaal valt niets anders te concluderen dan dat ze echt een live speler is: “The thing I love most about poker and is (in my humble opinion) the best part of my game is being able to read my opponents and knowing what they have….Visual clues are huge for my game. This is why online play always seemed to be a little bit out of my comfort zone. Online seems to be more about the statistics and math side of poker. And with online gamers it is ‘positive ev’ this and ‘nit’ that and ‘c bet’ this and lmfao... it's like another whole world out there.”
Niet om ’t een of ’t ander, maar het gaat online ook helemaal ruk met NicP. Nou is een maandje natuurlijk een samplesize van niets, ze is duidelijk niet happy. “Things are not going so hot... very sad. No matter what I did, it was wrong - no matter how far ahead I was when I went all in, I was always the one who ended up on the rail. It is weeks like this that make us wonder what the heck we are doing in this profession. And then tomorrow ... our hands hold up, we make all the right plays, we win all the money and the sun shines again! Here's to our tomorrows.”
